Ever since I visited neocities for the first time, I've been enchanted by all the sites I've come across and all their content. Blogs, arts, digital temples, lists of various links, games, music, etc...
So many things I would never have seen without leaving the big tech network... So many things that I would never have been able to see on my phone because many sites here don't support mobile mode.
The lack of mobile mode is part of the proposal of the old web movement, back then there were no smartphones so the sites are all made for a big screen. This loyalty to the old way of accessing the internet is unfortunately a major accessibility problem and it seems that most here can't understand why.
It may come as a surprise to some, especially those in the first world, but having access to a phone doesn't mean having access to a computer. Although they were invented first, personal computers are still considered a luxury in much of the world because they are much more expensive than a smartphone. Besides, until 2010 or so, most people didn't have access to the internet and only wanted to make phone calls, so why buy a computer?
A PERSONAL STORY
I was born in 99, the beginning of the z generation. My father had a computer since that time, but it didn't have internet. It was only used to edit documents. We got internet access at home in 2012! A year later I got my first smartphone.
In 2015, I joined an IT course, and out of a class of 45 people, 5 of them didn't know how to turn on a computer. But they had a smartphone and knew how to use the internet on it.
Out of curiosity, I asked the teacher after class if this had ever happened before and he said that every new class has someone who has never touched a computer before.
Everyone in my class was my age or older, so imagine how many people in this new generation, born after the popularization of smartphones, will have the opportunity to use a computer.
TL;DR
In the third world, a computer is a luxury, we are lucky enough to have one, but a lot of people don't. Are they going to be forced to stay off the old web? How are they going to be able to see things outside the big tech bubble if only that content is accessible on mobile?
This accessibility problem has to be tackled, please make your website mobile-friendly.
